Legitimacy of Landscape

Yaakov Israel is fascinated with the today’s state of Israel. Yaakov Israel’s “Legitimacy of Landscape” project opens windows onto those places, the people who live there, and their stories. His photographs confront an imposed and willful invisibility. That the inhabitants of those urban spaces – home to some twenty percent of Israel’s population – are largely invisible in these photographs serves to underline how these landscapes, too, would remain unseen but for the artist’s unflinching examination of his world. These images call into question received truths about who inhabits this place.
