No Place Like Hope
At the beginning of March 2020, amid raging numbers in China and in Europe, South Africa discovered that Patient Zero was among its population, and the frenzy to contain the panic and the race to buy supplies were finally accompanied by an inevitable lockdown. Deserted streets, panic buying and curfew. The humming of the South African Army patrol vehicles and the familiar blue lights of the police filled the streets of Johannesburg.
On the fringes of society, physical distance was imposed with sticks and rubber bullets fired at close range.
Michele Spatari (1991, Bologna, Italy) is a documentary photographer based in Johannesburg, where he mainly works for AFP in Southern Africa.
