2METRES: Ritratti mascherati a Ridley Road
These portraits were made on Ridley Road Food Market during the time of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown. The red markings on the road were painted by Hackney Council to indicate the two metres of social distance that is advised for shoppers.
The photographs were taken with a constant, unchanging frame, capturing the different communities that rub up against each other in this space, hoping to give a sense of something uniquely local and global at the same time.
Gideon Mendel (1959, Johannesburg, South Africa) earned international acclaim thanks to his intimate style of image-making and long-term commitment to socially engaged projects. He established his career with his searing photographs of the final years of apartheid.
