Gaia Squarci

New York’s health card diaries

Gaia draws a picture of an intensely intimate experience of the health crisis around Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn. Well aware of the complex and weak welfare system in the States, she witnesses first hand how the medical resources are torn, and the fabric of an unequal society takes a toll when confronted with such an emergency. Her images are accompanied by diary notes which draw us closer to the issues and offer us a space for reflection on themes that go beyond the current health crisis.

Gaia Squarci (1988, Verona, Italy) is a photographer and videographer who divides her time between Milan and New York. With a background in art history and photojournalism she leans toward a personal approach that moves away from the descriptive narrative tradition in documentary photography and video.
